Nature of Position

Summary

The County Extension Agent – Family & Consumer Sciences conducts practical, community-based educational programs to empower individuals, families, & communities in the area of nutrition, family well-being, health, food safety, & economic self-sufficiency. The agent works closely with a broad audience base & local volunteers to solicit support & participation within the county.

Job Duties

Develops and maintains an adequate knowledge of the social, economic, political and cultural characteristics of the county. Helps analyze situational information with other county faculty members and identifies education needs of clientele that can be met through Extension program activities. Assists with County Extension Council.

Creates annual plan for county programming in the Extension Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). Completes annual individual plan of work based on EFENP grant guidelines considering the issues identified by Family Issues Committee and other health related issues known to be of importance and/or interest to the public.

Conducts educational program in Family and Consumer Sciences with major responsibility for those related to nutrition and obesity prevention for the limited resource audience as defined by EFNEP guidelines. Provides opportunities for educational program and activities at the county level. Provides transportation of clientele to such activities where necessary programming. Utilizes Extension specialists and other resource personnel for subject matter, teaching methods, and materials. Responds to consumer calls as needed.

Completes EFNEP Program requirements through educational programs and other methods as required or deemed necessary. Revises and approves EFNEP reports and submits to state office by the appropriate deadline. Approves county EFNEP expenditures. Markets program to key stakeholders. Prepares and provides nutrition education to limited resource families, adults and youth as dictated by the EFENP grant. Reviews county financial records for accuracy and approves for the EFNEP Program. Responsible for oversight of funds related to EFNEP nutrition programming. Utilizes Extension specialists and other resource personnel for subject matter, teaching methods, and materials. Responds to consumer calls as needed.

Directly supervises EFENP program assistants working in the county including program audits and observations, planning for and purchasing supplies for food demonstration, performance evaluations, monitoring travel and daily itinerary. Works with staff chair in evaluation and disciplinary action of EFNEP program assistants. Monitors program assistants travel, daily itineraries and lesson progress reports.

Evaluates program efforts based on stated objectives. Recommends improvement as needed. Collects and reviews evaluation data for programs delivered and makes adjustment to programs as necessary. Utilizes County Extension Council and others to evaluate program processes and results.

Responsible for keeping current in civil rights compliance and knowledgeable of civil rights rules and regulations. Plans and conducts educational activities to target minorities in the EFNEP eligible audience in order to maintain a minimum of 80% parity of participation by race and gender in the programs.

Skills

Knowledge in one or more family & consumer sciences subject matter areas appropriate to the county assignment. Ability to speak & write clearly & communicate ideas effectively. Ability to work long, irregular hours & travel frequently. Ability to conduct & plan programs & work with all clientele regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in family & consumer sciences or related field of study is required. Must have transportation for use on the job with liability insurance in effect. Must agree to a background check authorizing release of relevant Arkansas Child Abuse & Neglect Central Registry records.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in family and consumer sciences or related field of study. Fluent in Spanish.
